Margaret Van Meter, MD


Born and raised in Northern Nevada, Dr. Margaret Van Meter joined Cancer Care Specialists in September 2012.  Dr. Van Meter received her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology summa cum laude from Rice University in Houston, Texas and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, San Francisco.  She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.  Her subspecialty Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship training was completed at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, a hospital consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the top hospital in the nation for cancer care.

Over the course of her medical training, Dr. Van Meter has participated in both clinical and laboratory-based research and has published several papers in medical journals.  While at UCSF, Dr. Van Meter’s honors included the Dean’s Prize in Student Research and the Department of Medicine Community Service Award.  During her fellowship at M. D. Anderson, Dr. Van Meter was selected as a Chief Fellow and received the Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital Medical Oncology Fellow of the Year award.

Dr. Van Meter’s expertise is in caring for patients with a wide range of cancers and blood disorders.  She believes in providing patients and their families with clear, evidence-based information about their disease and treatment options, and values working together to develop an individualized management plan.

In her free time, Dr. Van Meter enjoys spending time in the beautiful Nevada desert and mountains with her husband and daughters.
